The children curl up in a ball like hedgehogs and pretend to sleep. “It” is trying to wake them up and catch them. The “hedgehogs tell the rhyme”:

It asks: “Are you awake little hedgehogs?”
The hedgehogs can choose to answer “yes” or “no”. If the answer is “yes” they run around the gym and It catches one of them. The “hedgehog” caught will be the next It.
